English 9A—spring 2018

Welcome to English 9A with Mrs. Webb. This is a second chance for you to meet the required 9th grade English standards. This is also a place for you to get additional help with your other English course work. So, what are we going to do in here?

Course Overview

First 9 weeks:

  • Study of short stories and the elements of story-telling. Students will write their own short story and share with the class. This will be done in class with specific due dates.
  • Essay writing—hero essay. This will be done in class with specific due dates.
  • Grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure lessons.
  • Work on second semester reading and writing assignments.

Second 9 weeks

  • Novel or full-length nonfiction study—students will select their own text to read based on reading level and interest. Assignments and assessments over this will be project based. Students will have several options from which to choose. Individual deadlines will be set as part of this process.
  • Oral presentation of book project.
  • Grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure lessons.
  • Work on second semester reading and writing assignments.

Materials (these can be left in the block 7 bins in the classroom—label your personal items)

  • a folder or binder to leave in my classroom
  • blue or black pen, pencil, loose leaf paper (in folder or binder)
  • all books, handouts, worksheets, etc.

Assignments and Attendance

  • All assignments will be DONE IN CLASS. You will not have homework unless you have absences for which to make up work (ATTENDANCE IS KEY!).
  • You have the opportunity (be required) to redo essays until you have reached the standards.
  • Truant students will lose the opportunity to take this course for English credit.

Student Behavior

  • When the bell rings students must be in their seats ready to work.
  • Students should use rest rooms and get drinks during passing period or lunch.  You will be allowed only three “passes” per semester.
  • Appropriate school behavior is expected at all times. Thank you!  (Please refer to classroom norms if necessary.)
  • NO food and/or drink (except water) will be allowed.  Gum will be on a trial basis.

Grading

90-100% = A       80-89% = B          70=79% = C         60-69% = D          below 60% = F

  • Assignments will be graded on a point scale.  The number of points possible differs on each assignment.  Written assignments and projects will be graded using a different rubric for each task.  Rubrics will be given with the assignments.  Major projects and essays will carry more weight than quizzes and daily work.
