Unified
Lakewood High School (LHS) participates in Unified Athletics and offers a unique program to meet the special needs of the participants. It has received increasing annual grants from outside agencies in support of this mission.
Link Crew
Link Crew is a high school transition program that welcomes freshmen and supports them throughout their first year. Built on the belief that students can help other students succeed, 83 juniors and seniors are selected to mentor, act as positive role models, and guide freshmen to discover what it takes to be successful during the transition to high school.
Academics
A total of 826 Advanced Placement exams were administered last year and over 78% of students tested scored a 3 or higher.
Over the last 20-plus years, an average of 95% of the LHS International Baccalaureate graduates have earned their IB diplomas, and 97% of the class of 2023 earned the full IB Diploma.
Fifteen out of the past 20 years, an LHS student has been designated a Boettcher Scholar, one of 40 top high school students in the state.
Music
The LHS music program is recognized around the state for its high level of achievement in both vocal and instrumental music. LHS has had 14 different ensembles selected to perform at the Colorado Music Educators Association Conference, most recently the chamber orchestra, in 2023. The Bengal Regiment is a 12-time state marching band finalist and the wind ensemble has been selected to perform at the state Concert Band Festival 12 times.
Art
Every year LHS art students are recognized with awards in the annual Jeffco High School Art Exhibit, state and National Scholastics Art and Writing Competition, PTA Reflection Contest and the Congressional Art Show.
Students submit a variety of art forms for art exhibitions and collaborate with local community venues such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Teen Show, Foothills Art Center and local galleries. Art students gain opportunities to learn the art exhibition and business with art.
Theatre
The LHS Theatre Company (LHSTC ) has received 50 Bobby G nominations in the past five years for outstanding performance and technical work for spring musicals. In 2023, LHSTC garnered four wins for best in show, director, actor and lighting design. The Bobby G Award is the state qualifying competition leading to the national Jimmy Awards in New York City. In 2018, LHSTC was named one of three top theatre programs in the country by the Educational Theatre Association.
ESL
The English as a Second Language Department at LHS supports and monitors a large population of students from 32 two different language backgrounds. Some 407 students (22% of the student population) have a primary home language other than English.
Athletics
LHS has a nearly 50% participation rate in Tiger athletics. Highlights from the 2022-23 school year prove the Lakewood Tiger mantra: 22 Teams – One Family.
LHS student-athletes continued a run of great state performances, with individual state champions and high state finishers. Lakewood was one of two schools with multiple CHSAA 5A Athletes of the Year, for gymnastics and boys’ lacrosse. Importantly, Lakewood boasted 116 athletes who attained First-Team Academic All-State honors.
LHS gymnastics had another banner season, winning its second consecutive Jeffco League championship. The team was regional runner-up and placed numerous individuals on the podium at the state championships. Individually, we had the all-around state champion, individual apparatus champions and multiple place winners.
LHS softball qualified for the state tournament for the fourth consecutive season and had a terrific run to finish their season.
LHS girls’ and boys' tennis and girls’ and boys' cross country all had strong seasons with all-conference performers, state qualifiers and career-best times.
Boys’ lacrosse won the program’s first-ever state playoff game and was one of the best teams in all of Class 5A.
Girls’ soccer qualified for the state playoffs and started to ascend with a lot of younger players on the roster. LHS wrestling had an incredible season with three state qualifiers and a fourth-place individual finish.
Girls’ and boys’ swimming both had good seasons highlighted by multiple individuals and relays qualifying for the state meet and a boys’ individual state placer.
Video production
This year LHS is celebrating our 10th anniversary of the video production class and student body winning first place in a national contest sponsored by “Good Morning America” for an original lip dub. Filmed to the hit single “Roar” by Katy Perry, the performance earned LHS a private concert by the artist at LHS in 2013.
