This is the image for the news article titled Leigh Schmidt & Izzi GeeLakewood High School always encourages students to try their best and achieve their goals. The staff and administration hold students to a high standard, and that is something several students have taken to heart. Students are continuously striving to do their best in every aspect, and two prime examples of this are juniors Leigh Schmidt and Izzi Gee.

Leigh Schmidt is the “unofficial leader” of the Diversity Club as well as an avid environmental and progressive activist in the Denver community. She often meets with political figures at the state level and below, and via her growing social media presence, she encourages followers to do what they can to make a difference in the world.

For anyone who wants to make a difference, Leigh advises that they “get involved in something- don't be afraid that you don't have enough experience to get involved.”

For the last four years, she has been working on a progressive policy and has participated in environmental activism since she was in 6th grade. She also hopes to run for elected office before she turns thirty and believes that the climate crisis is one of the most pressing issues at the moment.

Leigh says that she “tries not to be a perfectionist on everything that she does so her assignments don't take longer than they need to.” Moreover, she stresses the importance of prioritizing mental health in order to avoid burning out.

Not only is Leigh an avid activist within the community, but she is also an exceptional student and a strong club leader.

Izzi Gee is a varsity gymnast at LHS and shared her story surrounding the sport that she became so good at after being in gymnastics for approximately twelve years. Izzi has competed in state two years in a row, with this being the year that she took the title of Colorado All Around Champion.

This victory of hers was featured on various LHS instagram accounts which celebrated her success, and she was also featured on CHSAA’s instagram, an account that has over thirty-four-thousand followers.

Clearly, practice makes perfect because Izzi says that she spends around twenty-five hours a week doing gymnastics. It seems to pay off, though, as she says, “I really enjoy high school gymnastics; it’s really fun.”

She always aims to do her best and aspires to be looked at by colleges. That being said, Izzi Gee is a clear representation of the work ethic that the student athletes at Lakewood High School have.

At LHS, the determination and strong work ethic of students is what sets our school apart from the rest. We have a well rounded student body where athletics, academics, clubs, and community outreach are all meaningful aspects of the school. Leigh Schmidt and Izzi Gee are outstanding within their respective school involvement and both of them inspire others to be the best that they can be.
