What Can Counselors Help With?

LHS school counselors strive to support students across life domains. The following is just a partial list of issues that counselors can help with:

Academic Issues/Difficulties
Career Exploration
Eating Disorders
Future Planning
Identity Issues
Peer Pressure
Sexual Harassment
Substance Use/Abuse
Transition Issues

In most instances, conversations between students and their counselor are private. In other words, what is said in the counseling office stays in the counseling office. However, it is important that parents and students realize that there are three important exceptions to this rule. In the following instances, counselors are legally obligated to share information with the proper authorities:

  • A student indicates that he/she intends to harm himself/herself
  • A student indicates that he/she is going to harm someone else
  • A student indicates that he/she is being physically, sexually, or emotionally abused by someone else

In these situations, school officials, law enforcement and/or social services will be notified.
