English Language Arts at Lakewood High School
The Lakewood High School (LHS) English department is committed to cultivating a passion for reading, writing and critical thinking skills. The staff believes that literature is a gateway to understanding the human experience, fostering empathy and developing the intellectual abilities necessary for success in an ever-evolving world.
The ability to think critically is paramount in our information and technology-filled world. The LHS English curriculum is designed to cultivate analytical skills, encouraging students to question, evaluate and synthesize information from various sources.
We view reading as a skill as well as an opportunity for exploration and discovery. Students will study a diverse range of voices, genres and cultures. Through carefully selected texts and engaging discussions and activities, the LHS team aims to kindle a lifelong enthusiasm for reading, enabling students to find inspiration and intellectual stimulation in their literary and rhetorical reading.
Writing is a tool with which students articulate their thoughts, express their creativity and communicate effectively, and will be used as a tool for assessment. A variety of methods and products will be practiced within the writing process.
Students will build, practice and refine the skills necessary to enter postsecondary workforce and education.
