Science in Jeffco
The science department focuses on fostering scientific literacy in students. Quality, equitable science curricula, resources and professional learning are developed based on research to support thriving, scientifically minded thinkers.
Science at Lakewood High School
Why is science education important? According to Next Generation Science Standards, “There is no doubt that science – and therefore, science education – is central to the lives of all Americans. Never before has our world been so complex and scientific literacy is critical to making sense of it all. Science is also at the heart of America's ability to continue innovating, leading, and creating jobs for the future”
Science teachers at Lakewood High School (LHS) deliver relevant, engaging student-centered curricula designed to increase scientific literacy and prepare students for their post-high school plans.
We offer many levels of science at LHS to match the diverse backgrounds and learning needs of our students, including language-supported, general, Honors, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate levels.
Jeffco requires 3 science credits for graduation. However, students who plan to pursue a career in science or engineering should take at least 4 credits of science. Most courses are full-year classes, which earn students 1 credit.
Please see the Science Pathways Graphic below for a full list of science courses offered at LHS and possible pathways students can take to earn their 3 required science credits.
