As the clock was ticking down to its final moments in the year, the family gathered around and started talking about what they had accomplished in the last year. It was only thirty minutes away from a fresh, new start for everyone. Memories and stories were exchanged and emotion filled the air as they all gathered around; tears, laughter and even some anger remained, but it was all in a high-spirited manner.

As soon as the TV announced that there were only 15 minutes left ‘till the New Year, the family agreed to tell their New Year's resolutions. Most of them were very nice and subtle, such as getting fit, saving more money for the year, and getting to meet new people. These were the usual things that most people wanted to accomplish in the New Year. 12 grapes, one for each month, were ready to be eaten as a way of bringing good luck to the New Year, which is only minutes away. As the time was near, the anticipation was evident. The family was getting ready to celebrate the New Year. Memories floated about. The kids ran around, getting ready to welcome the New Year, but they really didn't care. All they cared about was that they were able to stay up past their bedtime and play games, so they didn't pay as much attention as the adults did to the TV. Tick, tock, tick, tock, the clock went.

The scent of pine and soft lavender filled the air. Candles were lit and they were very comforting. As the clock started to go down, minute by minute, there were only five minutes left until the New Year would arrive. Time was going by fast and the anticipation in the air grew even stronger. The children came downstairs and sat down, even though they were very anxious, yet they weren't even paying attention to what was happening. The grapes, all in little plastic cups, were ready to be eaten. Then the final minute began.

The countdown was happening; every second felt like a minute passing. The tension was stronger and even more prevalent than before. “10!” exclaimed the reporter, the grapes in hand, and everybody else counting down as well. “9!” The kids were even counting down now, but they didn't know what was happening because it was all too quick. “8,7,6,5!” The family was practically shouting at the top of their lungs. “4, 3, 2, 1! Happy New Year!” The family shouted in delight, eating their grapes and hugging each other. The New Year had finally arrived. It was the very first time that family was ever this close.
